June 27, 2008the desert city of dubai Posted at 07:38 PM (haven't been blogging 'cause haven't been anywhere... until now) spent 5 days in dubai. many of you have probably heard that it is dreadfully hot. it is. but did you know that it is also, largely, monochromatically beige? the city itself is nothing much. in fact it borders on unattractive. sure, they have all these fancy buildings but 1) they're all shrouded in dust, and 2) there seems to be no system as to where or why they're built. the rest of the city is composed of malls. true, some had really good deals. but know the prices here first because not everything is universally cheap. like i had an officemate buy a psp for about P1,500 more than the price here. we were on a tour so the food was so-so. but the grills and kebabs are reliable. and they have this salad made from parsley, tomatoes, onions, and vinegar. very refreshing. great for the weather. even the duty free was a bit of a let down. i'd take the singapore airport any day. but the desert. ahhhhh. the desert is ravishingly beautiful. we went on a desert trip - 5 in one land cruiser which whooshes through the dunes. like a carnival ride because some of those dunes can get pretty tall. then we stopped at what literally looked like the middle of nowhere and took in the sunset. totally breathtaking in its isolation. nothing like it.
