a writing lesson learned

the teacher in me has to share this. the major criticism about this second book - which, to my mind is perfectly valid and one that writing students would do well to learn i think.

see, when i put in people in this book, i was trying to make them as familiar to the reader as they are to me. i was hoping that by not formally introducing them, the effect would be that the reader would feel they needed no introduction.

alas, that didn't seem to be the case. from different people i heard the comment that i should have introduced the people. ah well. lesson learned.

and, well, i figure, i'd like to do the introduction here

the characters in oh my gosh! the incredible lightness of being burgis:

joanna is my best friend who has experienced most of the things in the book with me.

daffo and pepong are her cousins.

grace, michelle, and karen are good friends from college who, thankfully, didn't think i was all that hopeless even if my class attendance said otherwise.

stef and mabi are also good friends who have seen me in a number of (sometimes strange) situations and can quip with the best of them.

my apologies for not introducing you properly in the book...
